Code of Silence:
The IRA can not reform itself. The Costa Nostra or mafia started as a political protection or “liberation” organization in Sicily under medieval conditions and invasions. Underground organization use criminal systems, blood ties, secrecy, enforcement, robbery, smuggling, money laundry, and time in jail with ordinary criminals to get their way. There is a striking similarity with central Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and Asia where liberation groups become criminal gangs. The IRA is just another case. The corruption of many independent ex-colonial nations starts with the transfer of underground resistance into political parties. The PLO and the resistance have these problems with connections to crime – bombing, murder; criminal plots were also common in Russia before the revolution and part of the Communist operation.
This leaves the critical question of terrorism as a form of warfare used around the world from Black Panthers, Red Guard, Vietnam to Israel (by both sides) and the change from resistance to government. Gandhi showed another way. If the law and order is mean and nasty resistance is understandable and in kind leading into a cycle of violence, chaos, and anarchy. It is not useful to be romantic about IRA, Che Guevara, Arafat, USAMA BIN LADEN etc.,
