The keys to heaven:

The power of the pope is based on a medieval superstition that the apostolic secession of the vicar of Rome held the keys to heaven. Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (KJV) Keys to Heaven means Catholicism supposedly sends a person to heaven, and there is no other way to get there. The keys consist of seven sacraments. NonCatholics don't have them and could not get saved.

The Church grew in a society of ignorant superstitious peasants ruled by a small class of landowning aristocracy backed up by the magical powers of the church. If they behaved they would have their reward in paradise, if not they we damn in hell. The Papal sign is the crossed keys plus the bee of the Borges. Thus the growth of the Catholic church in Africa, Latin America and third world where these condition still exist while a decline in Western educated technical society.

The case of the right to die in the USA – and the absolutisms of the right to life people are ruminates the power of belief over evidence, rational choice, and all reason. Delusions, superstitions and magic still have power over the modern mind.
